From Welfare to Wealth: The Journey That Changed Everything

People are always growing and evolving, even when it’s hard to see it in ourselves. Growth doesn’t always look the way we think it should, and it never happens as quickly as we’d like. But it’s happening. People heal, they learn, they stretch – and they rise.

It’s fascinating how you can sit across from someone, share a laugh, swap stories, and never realize what they’ve lived through. So today, I want to share part of my story – not because it’s special or unique, but because it shaped me, and maybe it will speak to you too.

The Survival Years

There was a time in my life when I was just surviving.
I was a single mom, living with an alcoholic boyfriend who was rarely around. I worked three dead-end jobs, lived in a little shack, and relied on welfare to keep my baby and me afloat. Sometimes dinner was nothing more than peas and rice because that’s all we had.

But survival wasn’t just about money.
It was about energy. Every day, I woke up worried about how I’d stretch a gallon of gas to get to work or how to make the bills balance when they clearly didn’t. Southern California in the early 90s wasn’t cheap, and I was exhausted.

Yet, something inside me refused to give up.
Deep down, I knew there had to be more to life than scraping by. But here’s the thing: the hardest work I did back then wasn’t about making money. It was about learning to love myself.

Taking the First Leap

The real battle was fighting the self-doubt, the inner critic, the belief that I wasn’t worthy of more. Until I started shifting those patterns, nothing outside of me could truly change.

One day, when my son was six months old, I saw an ad for a company called Christmas Around the World. I had no money for Christmas gifts or decorations, but there was a stuffed Christmas duck I wanted for my baby. So, I signed up.

I didn’t have friends or family nearby. I had no one to sell to. But I was determined. That first year, I made just enough to cover the cost of the sales kit. But something had shifted. I wasn’t just hooked on the money – I was hooked on the feeling of possibility.

I showed up even when I was tired. I volunteered for the parties no one else wanted. I pushed through the fear of standing in front of strangers, because the idea of having nothing for my son scared me more.

The World Starts to Shift

In three years, everything began to change.

First, I began to heal. I learned to love myself – really love myself. I left the boyfriend, moved to Arizona, and within ten months met the man who’s been my husband for 31+ years.

That little side hustle grew right alongside my self-worth. And trust me, those things are absolutely connected.

In those early years, I earned four all-expenses-paid incentive trips around the world. Me, the girl who once survived on food stamps, now traveling in luxury. That’s where my love of travel was born – and where I first saw how big life could be.

Stepping Into My Calling

That little side hustle was just the beginning.

Over the next decade, I balanced part-time work and raising my kids. I became the top supervisor in the company. People kept asking me: “What’s the secret?” Here’s what I discovered: my superpower has always been thinking outside the box. I questioned the rules and trusted my higher perspective.

But in 2000, life shifted again.

My ex’s mom passed away while I was by her side. A few months later, my grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s, died tragically after wandering out into the cold. Those losses cracked something open in me.

I realized that my side hustle was never the endgame. It was a stepping stone, a teacher – a way to learn to trust myself. But I was meant for more.

So, I took another leap.

I began teaching classes, offering intuitive readings, and holding private energy sessions. I taught at colleges, built a healing center, launched a nonprofit, and began speaking on stages nationwide.

And it didn’t stop there.

  • I started leading transformational travel adventures
  • I began teaching and speaking internationally
  • I wrote books and created memberships, masterminds, and programs that now support thousands around the world

I stepped up. I claimed my gifts. I opened myself to receive abundance, love, and joy – and built a business that brought more wealth and well-being than I could have ever imagined. It even allowed me to retire my husband just ten years into this journey.

The Power of Mentorship

Sometimes I wonder: what if I’d had a mentor back then?
Someone to guide me, to save me from some of those stumbles, to tell me I was worthy when I didn’t believe it myself?

I had no one. I figured it out piece by piece, carving my own path. And that worked for me. But it’s exactly why I do what I do now.

I get to be that mentor for others – the one I needed. Because I know how much time, energy, and frustration it can save to have someone in your corner. Over the years, I’ve also invested in my own coaches and mentors – because growth never stops.

Yes, it’s work.
But it’s the kind of work that changes your life, especially when you have the right support.

What “Wealth” Really Means

Here’s something most people don’t realize:
The word “wealth” comes from the Old English word wela, meaning well-being and prosperity in abundance.

So, when I say I wish you wealth, I’m speaking from my soul.

I wish you well-being.
I wish you abundance.
I wish you the joy of discovering how powerful you really are.

You are enough.
You are worthy.
And you are capable of creating a life bigger and more beautiful than you ever imagined.

I’d love to hear a part of your story that has shaped who you have become. Shoot me an email to [email protected] and share how your well-being has expanded as you have stepped into your gifts!
